Richard Anthony Marasco, age 62, of Niagara Falls, NY, passed away peacefully on Monday, September 16, 2013 in his Niagara Falls home surrounded by his family, under the care of Niagara Hospice. He was born in Niagara Falls, NY, the son of Frances (Coniglio) and the late Salvatore Marasco.
Ric was a graduate of Niagara County Community College in 1970 and received a Bachelor's Degree from SUNY at Brockport and his Master's Degree from Niagara University in 1995. As a young man, he worked as a machinist while attending college. On June 20, 1981, he married the former Joanne M. Cale in Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church. From 1979-1989, he owned and operated Marasco's Meats on 19th Street in Niagara Falls. As a member of the Pine Avenue Business Association, Ric was instrumental in its reorganization and served as vice president and treasurer. In 1996, he received the Stellar Star Award for his service to the PABA. In 1990, he entered the teaching profession as a high school History teacher for Niagara Falls City School District. Ric was an executive board member of the teachers union. In 2006, he received the Meritorious Service Award and in 2010 received the Distinguished Award for his dedicated service to the teachers union.
In 2009, he was elected to the Niagara County Legislature in the 1st District. Ric was a community activist and a member of the Niagara Falls Scenic Protection Board, the Niagara Falls Waterfront Revitalization Committee and the Neighborhood Housing Authority. He is remembered by many as a stand-up comedian frequently entertaining at banquets, parties, and retirements over the years as "Fr. Rico Sarducci the Pope's Emissary".
He is survived by his wife of 32 years, Joanne M. (Cale) Marasco; two children, Matthew and Lea Marasco; his mother, Frances (Coniglio) Marasco; five siblings, David (Marianne Fraser) Marasco, Mary Ann (Thomas) Slaiman, Kathleen (Robert) Culbreath, James (Dawn) Marasco, Salvatore (Rocio) Marasco, Jr.; his mother-in-law, Connie (Rutigliano) Cale; a brother-in-law, Samuel (Patsy) Cale; and many loving nieces, nephews and dear friends. Ric was predeceased by his father, the late Salvatore Marasco; and his father-in-law, the late Samuel Cale.
The family will be present to receive friends on Thursday evening from 7-9 PM and on Friday from 2-4 PM and 7-9 PM at the SPALLINO-AMIGONE FUNERAL HOME, 1300 Pine Avenue, Niagara Falls, where Prayers will be said on Saturday morning at 9:15 AM, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial celebrated at St. Raphael Parish, 3840 Macklem Ave. (at College Ave.) at 10:00 AM. Rev. Ivan Skenderovic, officiating. Entombment will be in St. Joseph Cemetery, Niagara Falls, NY. Friends invited. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Ric's memory to DeGraff Memorial Hospital Rehabilitation Program.
