GRAND ISLAND — Roger W. Ohnsorg, of Grand Island, on Monday, October 22, 2012, at Roswell Park Cancer Institute. Roger was born on Staten Island, NY, in 1937, the son of William F. and Ruth Ohnsorg.

After graduating from Alfred University in 1959 with a degree in ceramic engineering and a tour in the US Army, Roger took a position with Carborundum Corporation in Keasbey, NJ, and was later transferred to Niagara Falls, earning an MBA and finishing his career at Carborundum. His research led to several patents and to his participation in international conferences.

Throughout his life, Roger was an accomplished tennis and racquetball amateur, winning numerous tournaments and holding regional titles in both sports. He was also an avid gardener, volunteering with a local garden club, with his own gardens sometimes featured on the clubs garden tours. Roger attended Trinity United Methodist Church on Grand Island, teaching adult classes and assisting with the church's bookkeeping tasks. Most recently, he dedicated himself to working with Congolese refugee families through the Journey's End organization, becoming much beloved by his fellow volunteers and the families he assisted in their resettlement.

Roger developed a deep love and appreciation of the Niagara Falls area and its history. He   authored two books, "The Bridges of Goat Island", and "Robert Lindley Murray - The Reluctant U.S. Tennis Champion", the latter book combining his interest in local history with his love for the game of tennis.

Roger was predeceased by his parents and his sister, Lee; and is survived by a brother, William and his wife, Deborah of Scotch Plains, NJ; their two grown children and their four grandchildren.

A memorial service  will be held on Friday, December 7th, at 10 AM at Trinity UM Church, 2100 Whitehaven Rd., Grand Island. Contributions in Roger's memory can be made to Journey's End Refugee Services of Buffalo (; or to the Refugee Fund of Trinity United Methodist Church.
