Walter "Butch" Hillman


Walter "Butch" Hillman, 85, of Niagara Falls, NY, passed from this life on Sunday, April 28, 2013 at his residence, surrounded by his loving family, while under the care of Niagara Hospice. Born on September 9, 1927 in Niagara Falls, NY, he was the son of the late Walter and Ruby (Shepphard) Hillman.
Mr. Hillman was a lifelong resident of Niagara Falls, NY and attended local schools. Butch, as he was known by family and friends, proudly served in the United States Army, during the Korean War, from February 12, 1951 until his honorable discharge on January 9, 1953. While serving, he was awarded the Korean Service Medal with 3 Bronze Stars and the UN Service Medal. On December 6, 1952, Mr. Hillman married the former Betty J. Peery in Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church. She predeceased him on July 4, 2011. Butch was employed by Nabisco, where he held various positions throughout his career, until his retirement in the early 1990's. He was a former member of the American Legion and enjoyed hunting with his nephews.
Mr. Hillman is survived by two daughters, Juanita (late Gary) Tobias of Niagara Falls, NY and Clara (Dennis) Jenks, Sr. of Niagara Falls, NY and was predeceased by one daughter, Karla Hillman. Butch is also survived by one grandchild, Jamie Wittcop of Virginia; one great-grandchild, Tobias Paul "Toby" Wittcop; two step-grandchildren, Dennis Jenks, Jr. of Puerto Rico and Shawn G. Jenks of Islip, NY; one brother, Henry "Hank" (late Leona) Hillman of Niagara Falls, NY; one sister, Lillian (late Oscar) Carbone of North Tonawanda, NY; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. In addition to his parents, wife and daughter, he was also predeceased by four siblings, Frank Hillman, Myrtle Wade, Clara Bennion and Ruth Gray.
The family will be present to receive friends on Friday from 2-4 PM and 7-9 PM in the Chapel of OTTO REDANZ FUNERAL HOME, 2215 Military Road, Niagara Falls, NY (716-297-9007) where a funeral service will be held on Saturday, May 4th at 10:00 AM with Deacon Richard Baker officiating.
