NORTH TONAWANDA —
Joseph Kraus, Jr., 67 years old, of North Tonawanda and formerly of Niagara Falls, passed away on July 27, 2013, surrounded by his family, while under the care of Niagara Hospice. He was born in Niagara Falls on April 24, 1946, the son of the late Joseph Sr. and Helen (Zaczek) Kraus. He attended Holy Trinity Parochial School, Trott Vocational High School and was a 1972 graduate of Niagara University where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in chemistry.
Mr. Kraus served with the United States Army during the Vietnam Conflict. He was an air traffic controller and was awarded the Vietnam Service Medal with 3 bronze stars, the Vietnam Cross of Gallantry, the Good Conduct Medal and the National Defense Service Medal. He was honorably discharged on September 11, 1972.
Mr. Kraus worked as a Senior Systems Programmer for 25 years at Computer Task Group in Buffalo, and then at St. John's Medical Center in Detroit. He was a member of the Niagara-Orleans Model Railroad Engineers, the Society for Creative Anachronism, and was a Life Member of the Stephen Sikorsky Post 1322. He was Pack Leader for Cub Scout Troop #617 and Troop Leader for Boy Scout Troop #617.
Mr. Kraus is survived by his wife of 40 years, Varsha (Rawal) Kraus and his children, Michael (Jennifer) Kraus of Niagara Falls, Rachel (Anthony Lee) Kraus of Rochester, NY, and Sarah Kraus of North Tonawanda. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Aurora, Xander, Orion and Isla; as well as his brother, Richard (Beverly) Kraus of South Carolina and his sisters, Mary Jane (William) Bauer of Houston, TX and Theresa (John) McClellan of Niagara Falls.
Friends may call on Wednesday from 6 until 8 PM at the LABUDA FUNERAL HOME, INC., 356 Portage Road, Niagara Falls (716-284-1573), where funeral services will be held on Thursday at 9:30 AM, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial with military honors at 10:00 AM at St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church, 259 Fourth Street, Niagara Falls, with Rev. Jacek P. Mazur officiating. Interment will be in Arlington National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be made to Niagara Hospice, Inc., 4675 Sunset Drive, Lockport, NY 14094.
