NIAGARA FALLS —
Robert J. Snyder, age 89, of Niagara Falls, died Monday, February 25, 2013, at Niagara Hospice House in Lockport, after a lengthy illness.
Robert was born July 16, 1923 in Louisville, NY. He was the son of the late Jerry and Florence (Christian) Snyder. He was a graduate of Trott Vocational school and attended weather operator school in the Air Force. Robert enlisted in the Air Force and was a veteran of World War II and the Korean War. While serving in Italy, he was the weather advisor for the Normandy Invasion of France and also assisted in starting an orphanage in Italy.
Robert was a tool and die maker for Carborundum for 42 years, until his retirement in 1983. Robert was active in the Boy Scouts of America and earned his Eagle Scout at age 15, and served for many years as a Scout Master in Niagara Falls. Robert served as the President and Secretary of the Retired Men's Service Club and enjoyed singing in their chorus. He was a lifelong member of Riverside Presbyterian Church. He also served on the Senior Advisory Committee and with AARP 50+. He enjoyed bowling, lawn bowling, woodworking and gardening.
He is survived by his wife of 70 years, Violet (Eichelberger) Snyder and by his two children, daughter, Cynthia (Wayne) Houser of Ransomville, NY and son, Terry Snyder of Marion, NC; his two grandchildren, Shannon Johnson of Ransomville, NY and Robin (Bill) Sherman of Lewiston, NY; four great-grandchildren and seven great-great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, March 12, 2013, at 11 AM at Riverside Presbyterian Church, 815-84th Street, Niagara Falls, NY.
