Michael J. Komo

Niagara Gazette

ERIE, PA — Former Niagara Falls resident Michael J. Komo, of Erie PA, gently passed away in his sleep sometime in late January at his home.

Born to Thaddeus "Ted" and Genevieve Komorowski in 1951, he attended St. John de LaSalle School and the former Bishop Duffy High School before moving to Erie, where he graduated with honors from Gannon College with a BA in history and economics.

During his scholastic career, he stood out as a prominent athlete in several sports such as    basketball in the Catholic school leagues, as well as baseball in the LaSalle Little League and the Babe Ruth League.

He will be remembered for his prowess on the pitcher's mound where he perfected his fast ball that earned him a scholarship to Gannon, and was his ticket to the summer collegiate travel leagues that took him up and down the east coast.

In his senior year, he had a successful tryout with the Baltimore Orioles and was offered a   minor league contract, a framed copy of which hung in his office for years.

However, he instead chose to share his knowledge and sports ability as a history teacher and baseball coach with the Millcreek School System in Erie. A great source of athletic        encouragement and knowledge, he also coached his children's little league teams and helped his daughter, Michelle, develop into a successful track star in high school and college.

He left teaching for a career in insurance and financial planning with the Hartford Insurance Co. as a salesman and financial consultant, later moving to the Erie Insurance Co. where he worked in staff development, training personnel.

Although he lived in Erie since 1969, he never forgot his Niagara Falls roots and returned    frequently to visit family and friends, attend functions at his high school and enjoy Buffalo Bills games at Rich Stadium to which he had season tickets for many years. He was also an avid fisherman and won several competitions, including ones sponsored by the Gazette. His other athletic associations included golf leagues and softball for Lockport Discount Tire.

He is survived by his daughter, Michelle Bluman (Matthew) of Walkersville, MD; son, Michael R. Komo of Washington, D.C.; daughter, Valerie Komo of Erie. Also surviving is his brother, Thad J. (Vickie) Komorowski; nephew, Thaddeus Komorowski III; niece and goddaughter, Genna M. Komorowski, all of Niagara Falls, NY. He was predeceased by his sweet mom who joined the angels on Nov. 23, 2012.

A memorial service will be held March 6, 2013, at 9 AM at St. John de LaSalle Church, 8627 Buffalo Avenue, Niagara Falls, NY. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to a special fund in memory of Michael Komorowski with the Niagara Catholic Junior/Senior High School Athletic Fund, 520-66th Street, Niagara Falls, NY 14304.
