Aurelio Melidona


Aurelio Melidona, 86, of Niagara Falls, NY, passed away on Thursday, July 11, 2013 at his residence while under the care of Niagara Hospice. Born in San Giovanni, Calabria, Italy, he was the son of the late Giuseppi and Mariantonia (Scrufari) Melidona.
Aurelio was raised and educated in Italy. He served in the Italian Army's Military Police, and afterwards as a police officer in the Carabinieri. On January 6, 1957, he married Antonetta (Costarella) Melidona in Pentdatillo, Italy. Following their marriage, Aurelio and his wife came to Niagara Falls, NY, where they have resided until the present time. For thirty-two years, Aurelio worked in the construction business for Scrufari Construction Company in Niagara Falls, NY, as well as Laborers Union Local 91. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus Council 247 in Niagara Falls and served as a volunteer at DeGraff Memorial Hospital in North Tonawanda. Aurelio enjoyed traveling and was an avid fan of the Boston Bruins hockey team. He was an outdoor enthusiast and particularly enjoyed fishing and hunting. Above all, Aurelio treasured spending time with his family and friends, and especially adored his grandchildren.
In addition to his wife of fifty-six years, Aurelio is survived by two children, Maria (Christopher) DeSimone of Niagara Falls, NY and Mario (Michel) Melidona of Rochester, NY; seven grandchildren, Dr. Christopher (Brenna) DeSimone, Michelle (Jason) Brady, Dr. Daniel (Lori) DeSimone, Taylor Melidona, Samuel Melidona, Quinn Melidona and Luke Melidona; three great-grandchildren, Jason Brady, Ryan Brady and Antonella DeSimone; one brother, Gustavo (Christine) Melidona of Hollywood, FL; his sister-in-law, Dorothy Melidona of Buffalo, NY; and several nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews and cousins. He was also predeceased by nine siblings, Antonio Melidona, Guido Melidona, Flora Chiodo, Dominic Melidona, Mario Melidona, Arthur Melidona, Frank Melidona, Ottavio Melidona and Carmella Melidona.
Visitation will be on Sunday from 3-8 PM at the M.J. COLUCCI & SON NIAGARA FUNERAL CHAPEL, 2730 Military Road, Niagara Falls, NY, where funeral services will begin on Monday, July 15th at 9:15 AM, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 AM at Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph Parish at St. Joseph Church, 1413 Pine Avenue, Niagara Falls, NY with Rev. Duane R. Klizek officiating. Entombment will follow in St. Joseph Cemetery, Niagara Falls, NY. The Knights of Columbus Council 247 will conduct a prayer service on Sunday at 5:00 PM. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Niagara Hospice, 4675 Sunset Drive, Lockport, NY 14094.
