Mary (DiMuzio) Elia, 84, of Williamsville, NY, formerly of Niagara Falls, passed away peacefully Saturday, April 5, 2014 in Beechwood Continuing Care Skilled Nursing Center, after a lengthy illness.
She was born in Sant' Eufemia, Pescara, Italy on May 28, 1929, to the late Anthony and Angela (Zianni) DiMuzio. On May 18, 1957, the former Mary DiMuzio married Peter R. Elia in Beaver Falls, PA, and they made their home in Niagara Falls.
Mrs. Elia worked for Bell Telephone Co. as a telephone operator for many years, both in Beaver Falls, PA and Niagara Falls, NY. From 1960 until 2002, together with her husband, she owned and operated Frontier Tax and Duty Free Liquor, Frontier Motor Lodge, the Peace Bridge Exhibition Center and Custard Corner on Porter Avenue and the Peace Bridge.
Mary was a former member of Sacred Heart Church in Niagara Falls, NY, enjoyed traveling, was an avid golfer participating in several golf leagues. But most of all, she enjoyed spending time with her family and friends, especially her granddaughters.
She is survived by her husband of 57 years, Peter R. Elia of Williamsville, NY; two children, Anthony Robert (Mary Ann Spula) Elia of NYC, Diane E. (Raymond) Walter of Amherst, NY; two loving granddaughters, Grace and Natalie; one niece and one nephew. Mrs. Elia was predeceased by her parents, and her brother, the late Anthony DiMuzio.
The family will be present to receive friends Tuesday 5-8 PM at the SPALLINO-AMIGONE FUNERAL HOME, 1300 Pine Avenue, Niagara Falls, NY, where prayers will be said Wednesday morning at 9:15 AM, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial celebrated at Holy Family of Jesus, Mary & Joseph Parish at St. Joseph Church, 1413 Pine Ave., Niagara Falls, NY, at 10:00 AM. Rev. Stewart M. Lindsay, OSFS, officiating. Interment will be in St. Joseph Cemetery, Niagara Falls, NY. Family and friends invited. Flowers gratefully declined.
