NIAGARA FALLS — Sarah M. Rotella, age 89, of Niagara Falls, NY, passed away on Tuesday, March 4, 2014 in Our Lady of Peace Healthcare Center, after a brief illness. She was the daughter of the late Louis and Maria (nee Calabrese) Rotella.

Sarah was a lifelong resident of Niagara Falls. She attended local schools. During her later years she attended evening classes at Niagara University. She earned her Bachelor and Master's degrees and became certified by the NYS Department of Education to teach Spanish. Sarah had long-term assignments as a substitute for the district. She served as a member of the negotiating team for the NYS United Teachers for her local unit of which she served as treasurer and membership chairman for 16 years, and received an award for her   dedication to the unit and retired at the age of 77.

Soon after graduation from high school with honors, she was selected to work at Kimberly Clark Corporation working in two offices and became secretary to the General Manager until they closed. Shortly thereafter Sarah was hired as Office Manager for Tourism Niagara. Sarah also taught typing and Gregg Shorthand at Niagara Falls Adult Education Evening Division for 12 years. Sarah also taught English to the migrant farm workers at Barker Senior High School.

Sarah was a community volunteer and served as a Girl Scout Leader for two troops and enjoyed the summer camping activities with the scouts. She was a member of the YWCA and served on its Board of Directors, and was instrumental in restoring the after school Girl Reserved Program for high school students. During WWII, Sarah also served as her neighborhood Air Raid Warden and as Senior Chairperson for Military Program at the "Y" which provided refreshments and entertainment for the servicemen based at the                various local Military Installations. Sarah was a member of the Niagara Falls Chapter of the Catholic Daughters of America serving as Secretary/Historian and Director of the High School Girls Program. She also served on its Community Ambassador and Student Exchange Programs. Sarah enjoyed traveling to the countries that the visiting students came from. Sarah's pastimes included gardening, crocheting, tatting, embroidery, macramÈ, ceramics, needlepoint and candle making.

Sarah is survived by her nephews and nieces, Ralph (Marion) Sirianni, Lewis "Babe" (Marjorie) Rotella, Mariangela (Harold "H J") Smith and Michael Grandolfo; half-brother, Bernie (Connie) Rotella; half-sister, Mary Lou (Mark) Rawls; fond cousins, Sarah (Domenic) Chiarella, Domenic (Wilma) Calabrese, Sarah Bimonte; loving and devoted godchild, Barbara (Gregory) Moss; dear friends, Margaret McCleary, Joseph Brand, Anna Iannurelli and many great-nieces and nephews and great-great-nieces and nephews. Sarah was                      predeceased by the following members of her family: her step-mother, Caterina Rotella; siblings, Josephine (Frank) Sirianni, Domenic (Margaret) Rotella, Bernadine (Roberto) Grandolfo; and nieces, Mary Jo Wilson and Donna Mae Scalzo.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to her nephew, Ralph and his wife, Marion, for giving Aunt Sarah the BEST care.

There will be no prior visitation. A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph Parish at St. Joseph Church, 1413 Pine Ave., Niagara Falls, NY, at a later date. Memorial contributions may be made in Sarah's memory to Mother Angelica, c/o EWTN 5817, Old Leeds Road, Irondale, AL 35201.
