NIAGARA FALLS —
William T. Szegda, 87 years old, passed away at his home on March 8, 2014, while under the loving care of his wife, Agnes. He was born in Poland on July 13, 1926, the son of the late Wladyslaw and Bronislawa (Wencel) Szegda.
Mr. Szegda served with the Polish Forces under British Command from 1945 until 1948, and with the Polish Resettlement Corps from 1948 until his honorable discharge in 1949. In 1952, he moved to Niagara Falls. He was a delivery man for Wendt's Dairy for 40 years and retired in 1987. He was a member of the former Holy Trinity Church and former Sacred Heart Church and was a current member of Divine Mercy Parish. He was a life-member of the Echo Club and a volunteer at Sacred Heart Food Pantry. Mr. Szegda was a well-known pool player and won many pool tournaments.
Mr. Szegda is survived by his wife, Agnes E. (Olejniczak) Szegda, whom he married on April 22, 1961 at Holy Trinity Church. He is survived by his daughters, Chris (Mark Gravel) Callen of Wheatfield and Caroline (Jay Sauvageau) Szegda of Niagara Falls; his loving grandchildren who adore him and will miss him greatly, Christie Callen and Ryan Callen. He is also survived by his sister, Stasia Szeliga of Poland. He was predeceased by his brother, Adam Szegda; and sister, Christine Boczar.
Friends may call on Wednesday from 4-8 PM at Historic Holy Trinity Church, 1419 Falls St., where funeral services will be held on Thursday at 9 AM, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 AM at Divine Mercy Parish, corner of Niagara and 24th Streets, with Rev. Jacek P. Mazur officiating. Memorial contributions may be made to Historic Holy Trinity Church, 1419 Falls St., Niagara Falls, NY 14303 or to Niagara Hospice, Inc., 4675 Sunset Dr., Lockport, NY 14094.
