John J. O'Brien, 82, of St. Petersburg, FL, formerly of The Town of Niagara, NY, passed from this life on Sunday, May 5, 2013 in Mt. St. Mary's Hospital in Lewiston, NY, following a brief illness. Born on June 6, 1930 in Niagara Falls, NY, he was the son of the late John and Margaret (O'Sullivan) O'Brien.
Mr. O'Brien attended local schools and graduated from the former St. Mary's High School in 1948. Later, John earned his Bachelor of Business Administration Degree in Accounting from Niagara University. He proudly served as Staff Sergeant, in the United States Air Force, during the Korean War, from September 19, 1950, until his honorable discharge on September 7, 1954. On September 8, 1956, Mr. O'Brien married the former Catherine Greene. She predeceased him on December 3, 1997. John was employed by various companies in both Niagara Falls, NY and Maryland, where he specialized in computer operations and computer systems.
Mr. O'Brien was a former member of the former St. Teresa of the Infant Jesus Roman Catholic Church in Niagara Falls, NY and currently a member of St. Jude the Apostle Roman Catholic Church in St. Petersburg, FL as well as the Lewiston Council of the Arts, the Air Force Sergeants Association and the Town of Niagara Historical Society. Over the course of his life, John was the recipient of many awards and honors including Marquis Who's Who in the East. He served as President of the National Association of Accountants, President of the Niagara Wheatfield Athletic Association and President of the Niagara Falls Junior Chamber of Commerce. Mr. O'Brien was also active in the YMCA, the Whirlpool Park Little League and the Knights of Columbus. For the past few years, John gave freely of his time as a regular volunteer at the Springs Rehabilitation Facility in St. Petersburg, FL where he developed many new friendships.
Mr. O'Brien is survived by six children, Michael D. (Karen) O'Brien of Odenton, MD, Colleen M. O'Brien of St. Petersburg, FL, Dr. John J. (Michelle) O'Brien, Jr. of St. Petersburg, FL, Mary C. (Joel Casale) deWysocki of Niagara Falls, NY, James P. (Tomasina Kolbe) O'Brien of Williamsville, NY and Margaret A. (Neil) Lauryssens of Joppa, MD; seventeen grandchildren, Michael Jr., John Nathan and Adam O'Brien, Joseph, Sean, Conor and Grace O'Brien, Maureen and Douglas deWysocki, Jacquelyn and Kara O'Brien, Cal Lauryssens, Alyssa, Courtney and Anthony Casale, Michael Russo and Nick Kolbe; and many nieces, nephews and cousins locally, nationally and in Ireland. In addition to his parents and wife, John was predeceased by one brother, Michael Joseph (Norma of Pekin, NY) O'Brien.
The family will be present to receive friends on Thursday from 3-8 PM in the Chapel of OTTO REDANZ FUNERAL HOME, 2215 Military Road, Niagara Falls, NY (716-297-9007) where funeral services will begin on Friday, May 10th at 9:15 AM, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 AM which will be celebrated in St. Raphael Roman Catholic Parish (former St. Teresa of the Infant Jesus), College and Macklem Avenues, Niagara Falls, NY, with Rev. Ivan Skenderovic serving as celebrant. Prayers of committal and interment will follow in Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Lewiston, NY, concluding with Military Honors. In lieu of flowers, memorial offerings may be made to Niagara Hospice, 4675 Sunset Drive, Lockport, NY 14094.
