Niagara Gazette

NIAGARA FALLS — John Serianni, 93, passed away peacefully at his home in Niagara Falls, NY on Friday, August 16, 2013. He was born on December 7, 1919 to Carlo and Mary (Serianni) Montani. Following the death of his mother, John was given into the care of his uncle Angelo and aunt Rose Serianni, who adopted him and provided him a loving home and family.

John grew up in Niagara Falls and graduated from the former Trott Vocational High School,  having studied a Business Curriculum. He served in the Civilian Conservation Corps in the American Southwest and there developed his lifelong enjoyment and appreciation of the great outdoors. Upon his return, John was employed by the New York Central Railroad as a Yard Conductor and recently received a congratulatory letter and pin, thanking him for his 70-year association with the company.

John was a life member of the United Transportation Union Local #930 and a former member of the Hi-Hatters Motorcycle Club, and shared his passion for cars with his sons. He  enjoyed to travel and new experiences of all kinds.  In his later years, John became a voracious reader and enjoyed keeping up to date on local and world news. He was a great resource for his family for medical and financial information, and of course, sports knowledge. John stayed active well into his 90s, a fact he attributed to long walks with his Irish Setter, Shawn.

John was preceded in death by his wife, Helen (Peters) Serianni, whom he married in 1945; two sons, J. Michael (Kathryn of Niagara Falls, NY) Serianni and James Richard Serianni; and one brother, Carlo Montani. He is survived by three grandchildren, Debi (John) Barber, Lisa (Mark) McClellan and Sara (David) Englander, all of Niagara Falls, NY; four great-grandchildren, Mark and Mike McClellan and Salvatore and Emily Bianco, all of Niagara Falls, NY; two brothers, Richard (Mae) Serianni of St. Mary's, PA and Attilio Montani of Rome, Italy; and one sister, Mafalda (John) Legovich of New South Wales, Australia. John is also survived by one brother-in-law, James (late Helen) Peters of Lewiston, NY; two sisters-in-law, Arlene (late Joe) Peters of Binghamton, NY and Mary (Peter) Poskus of Illinois and his nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews and other relatives and friends.

There will be no prior visitation. A private graveside committal service will be held in Niagara Falls Memorial Park Cemetery, Lewiston, NY. If desired, memorial donations may be made to Niagara Hospice, 4675 Sunset Drive, Lockport, NY 14094, to whom the family sends their heartfelt thanks for their loving care and support. Arrangements have been entrusted to OTTO REDANZ FUNERAL HOME, 2215 Military Road, Niagara Falls, NY (716-297-9007).
