Joan Nolfe died on Monday, December 31, 2012 at St. Elizabeth's Hospital in Youngstown, OH. Joan was born in Niagara Falls, NY on October 9, 1950. She was the daughter of the late Dr. Charles P. Nolfe and Mrs. Joan C. (Russell) Nolfe. She was the sister of Ann C. Nolfe and the cousin of Mrs. Mary Byington.
"Joannie" was a graduate of St. Joseph's School, Madonna High School and Niagara County Community College. For several years, Joannie made her home in Hollywood, FL. While in Florida, Joannie worked for Hollywood Federal Savings and Loan and for Summit Electronics of Florida, Inc. In 1995, Joannie graduated from Niagara University with a Bachelor of Social Work degree. She was most proud of her work with the disabled veterans at the C.O.P.I.N. House on Buffalo Avenue. During the course of Joannie's life, and even from a young age, Joannie suffered from a number of disabilities and illnesses. She was very courageous, especially in the last four months which involved horrible suffering. She had a strong desire to live. Joannie was known for her beautiful red hair and her bright smile. She had a ready wit and a keen sense of humor. She was fiercely independent and was known for her candor. Joannie was a free spirit and had something of the poet in her soul. She had a great deal of empathy for others and was a loyal friend.
We would like to acknowledge the following friends whose love and concern meant so much to Joannie; the Caesar Capone Family, Olga Eliseo, Deborah Cutler, Kathy Crogan, Bill Stefik, Peter Hebert, Kate Proe, Lynn Scheiner, Biffy and Beth DeMartino, Alan Craden; longtime aide, Barbara White and nurse, Jean Romer.
