Sylvester Richard Szymanski

BAREFOOT BAY, FL — Sylvester Richard Szymanski, 87, of Barefoot Bay, FL, died Wednesday, March 6, 2013, after a long fight with cancer.

He was born to the late Joseph and Victoria (Mazur) Szymanski, June 12, 1925, in Wheatfield, NY. Richard graduated from Trott Vocational. He married Mary Ann Paluch  June 5, 1954. They lived in Niagara Falls, NY, before relocating to Barefoot Bay, FL in 1987.

Richard joined the Navy at 17 and was in the Pacific Theater of World War II. When he returned home he became a Fire Chief at Frontier Fire Hall, Niagara Falls, and then began a 34-year long career at Carborundum Coated Abrasives as the Chief Stationary Engineer. He was the President of the National Association of Power Engineers of Niagara Falls, a boiler inspector, and examiner for new up-coming engineers for over 20 years.

Richard was an active member in the Polish American Club of Vero Beach and Barefoot Bay, and was a President of both. He was an active at St. Luke's Catholic Church and head usher for over 10 years.

Richard is survived by a sister, Gizella Sawicki of Niagara Falls, NY. He was the youngest of 11 children. Richard was preceded by brothers, Commander USN Stanley Semanski, Chester and Walter Szymanski and sisters, Harriet Farley, Helen Asma, Val Soboleski and Mary Winiarski.

Richard is also survived by his wife, Mary Ann; one son, Martin Szymanski of Endicott, NY; four daughters, Victoria Pearson of Wilson, NY, Wanda Padula of Pennellville, NY, Julie Lambert of Fort Walton Beach, FL, and Mary Campbell of Roseland, FL. Richard was also grandfather of eight grandsons, five granddaughters and one great-grandson, Logan Neff.

A special thank you to son-in-law, Shawn Campbell for his daily help and love, during Richard's time of need.

Visitation will be held from 1-6 PM on March 10, 2013, at Strunk Funeral Home, Sebastian, FL. A prayer service will be held at 4:30 PM with The Rosary to follow. Interment with military honors will be held 9:15 AM March 11, 2013 in South Florida National Cemetery, Lake Worth, FL.
