LOCKPORT — Robert J. Gormley, MD, FACS, of Williamsville, NY, passed away on Friday, March 8, 2013, in Niagara Hospice House, Lockport, NY.

He was born in Niagara on the Lake, Ontario, on August 1, 1932, the son of the late Francis and Katharine (Leudeke) Gormley, and grew up in Niagara Falls, NY. He served with the U.S. Army.

Dr. Gormley was in the first graduating class from Bishop Duffy High School,  attended Niagara University and later graduated from the University of Ottawa School of Medicine. He did his internship at St. Francis Hospital in Honolulu, Hawaii, and his residency at the Cleveland Clinic.

Dr. Gormley returned to Niagara Falls in 1971, where he operated his practice for over 30 years, before becoming an associate of the Eye Care and Vision Associates for the past 10 years. In 2003 he traveled to the Philippines on a Medical Mission.

He was an active member of the New York State Ophthalmological Society, a Fellow of the  American College of Surgeons, a Diplomate with the American Academy of Opthalmology. Dr. Gormley was a member of the Niagara Falls Country Club for over 40 years, the Youngstown Yacht Club, the Park Country Club and the Hideaway Beach Club, Marco Island.

A lifelong fitness enthusiast, he enjoyed cycling, traveling and boating. For the past 35 years he spent part of every winter in Marco Island, FL.

He is survived by his wife, Faith (Sugg) Paddock Gormley and was the husband of the late Nancy J. (Neault) Gormley, who died in 1995; two sons, Tobin J. (Patricia Ann) Gormley of  Ransomville and Jay M. (Colette) Gormley of Kenmore, NY; a daughter, Jill K. Gormley of Sandown, NH; two granddaughters, Bridget N. and Gretchen Gormley; two brothers, Jerome F. "Jerry" (late Elizabeth) Gormley and Michael C. (Kathy) Gormley; two sisters-in-law, Norma MacLaren and Bernice Grimo. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

The family will be present on Sunday from 4-8 PM at the RHONEY FUNERAL HOME, 901 Cayuga Street, LEWISTON, NY, where funeral services will be held on Monday at 9:00 AM, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 AM at St. Peter's Church, 620 Center Street, Lewiston, NY, with the Rev. Patrick Flanagan officiating. Flowers are gratefully declined. Memorials may be made in his name to Niagara University or to Niagara Hospice. Interment with Military Honors in Oakland Rural Cemetery, Town of Porter, NY.
