Elizabeth J. Sottile

LEWISTON — Elizabeth "Betty" Jane (Russell) Sottile, 83, of Lewiston, NY, passed away on Tuesday, December 17, 2013, at Our Lady of Peace Nursing Care Residence in Lewiston, NY. Betty was born in Pittsfield, MA, a daughter of the late Raymond C. and Marjorie J. (McGrath) Russell and came to Niagara Falls at the age of 10 years old with her family.

Betty was a graduate of the former St. Mary's High School in Niagara Falls, NY and later earned a Bachelors of Science degree in biology from Mercyhurst College in Erie, PA, and a Master's degree in education from the University of Buffalo.  On July 1, 1961, she married Guy Tom Sottile at St. Teresa of the Infant Jesus Church in Niagara Falls, NY.

Betty was a dedicated math teacher for 36 years for the Niagara Falls School District at South Junior High School, LaSalle Junior and LaSalle Senior High School, and retired in 1992. In her personal time, she also tutored children who needed extra assistance in math. Betty was a member of the Niagara Falls College Club and the Niagara Falls Teachers Association, as well as serving as secretary. She was also a member of the Niagara Frontier Country Club.

Betty was an avid reader. She also enjoyed golfing with her husband and girlfriends, and playing bridge with her girlfriends. Betty's greatest pleasure was spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren. She particularly enjoyed cooking big family feasts and planning vacations. Betty had many special memories of vacationing with her family and friends at various places, including the Jersey Shore, Hilton Head, Orlando, Arizona, Memphis and Philadelphia.  Betty will be remembered as selfless to her family, friends and students.

Betty is survived by her husband of 52 years, Guy Tom Sottile; her son, Thomas Mark (Marie) Sottile of Doylestown, PA; two daughters, Lisa Ann (Richard) Bagdonas of Hamilton, Ontario, Canada and Carrie Lynn Sottile of Niagara Falls, NY; her grandchildren, Caitlyn Marie Sottile and Thomas Mark Sottile, Jr.; one sister, Marjorie (late Wayne) Hess of Collierville, TN and several nieces, nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by her parents and two nephews, Tommy Hess and Raymond Hess.

Visitation will be on Friday from 3-8 PM at the M.J. COLUCCI & SON NIAGARA FUNERAL CHAPEL, 2730 Military Road, Niagara Falls, NY, where funeral services will begin on Saturday, December 21st at 9:15 AM, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 AM in St. Raphael Church, 3840 Macklem Avenue, Niagara Falls, NY, with Rev. Ivan Skenderovic officiating. Entombment in Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Lewiston, NY. If desired, memorial offerings may be made to Alzheimer's Association of WNY, 2805 Wehrle Drive, Suite 6, Williamsville NY  14221; or to Our Lady of Peace Nursing Care Residence, 5285 Lewiston Road, Lewiston NY 14092.
