STELLA NIAGARA —
Sister Robertine Saunders, of Lower River Road, passed away on Monday, October 8, 2012, at Stella Niagara.
She was born Eleanor Saunders, in New Lexington, OH, on September 1, 1913, the daughter of the late Robert and Louise (Diamond) Saunders.
After graduation from St. Aloysius Academy in New Lexington, she entered the Sisters of St. Francis at Stella Niagara. In 1933 she made her profession of vows and began her teaching career at St. Elisabeth School in Charleston, WV.
Sister Robertine earned a B.A. in Ed. at St. Mary of the Springs in Columbus, OH, and her M.L.S at Villanova University. Sister taught at St. Benedict, St. Joachim, St. Ann, St. Michael, as well as Sacred Heart Academy and Bishop McMahon in the diocese of Buffalo. She was also a teacher at Holy Rosary, St. Leo, St. John, Sacred Heart and a librarian at DeSales High School in Columbus, OH. In 1981 she retired and did volunteer ministries in Columbus, OH.
After her retirement as a teacher, Sister Robertine volunteered at different ministries in the diocese of Columbus. In 2000 Sister returned to Stella Niagara where she resided in the Health Center for the retired Sisters.
She is survived by nieces and nephews, Robert, Bill, Tom, Tim, Greg and Leslie; as well as many great-nieces and nephews. Sister Robertine was the sister of the late John, Eddie and Paul Saunders and Mary Jane Saunders Holden; and aunt of the late Jim and Pat.
The family will be present at Stella Niagara, 4411 Lower River Road, on Thursday after 2:00 PM, where a prayer service will be held at 7:00 PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in the Sisters Chapel at Stella Niagara on Friday at 9:30 AM. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Sisters of St. Francis, 4411 Lower River Road, Stella Niagara, NY 14144. Interment in Stella Niagara Cemetery.
