Fred R. Hartmann

NORTH TONAWANDA — Fred R. Hartmann, 85 years old, passed away on Sunday, April 14, 2013, at Northgate Skilled Nursing Facility in North Tonawanda. He was born on February 4, 1928 in Pittsburgh PA, the son of Raymond and Bess (Knox) Hartmann.

Fred attended schools in Pittsburgh, PA and    later in Mayville, NY. After high school at age 17, Fred enlisted in the United States Navy where he served during the Korean War aboard the U.S.S. Taconic as a Radar Operator 3rd Class from July 22, 1947, until July 26, 1950, when he was honorably discharged. After his discharge, Fred attended school in Chicago where he learned the trade of auto body repair. After his graduation, Fred moved to Niagara Falls and was employed as a body repairman for Rivershore Garage. Shortly after, Fred met and on July 11, 1953, married Katherine (Serianni) Hartmann. In 1957 Fred became employed by the Niagara Falls School System as a custodian at LaSalle Senior High School and later at Gaskill Junior High School, until he retired in 1983. Fred enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren, woodworking and making Christmas crafts with his wife. Fred also enjoyed sailing, having built and sailed his own small boats. He was also a member of the Volare Lodge in Niagara Falls.

Fred was predeceased by his wife, Katherine, who passed away on June 24, 2001. He is survived by his two children, Kimberly A. (Thomas) Destino of Wheatfield, NY; John W. Hartmann of Los Angeles, CA; three grandchildren, Jessica, Thomas and Kaitlyn Destino; brothers, Raymond J. Hartmann of Pittsburgh, PA and Robert H. Hartmann of Westfield, NY; and several sisters-in law; nieces and nephews.

The family wishes to extend their appreciation and gratitude to the staff of Northgate Health facility in North Tonawanda for the care extended to Fred.

There will be no prior visitation. The family would like to gather with friends to remember Fred's life on Wednesday April 24, 2013, at 1:00 PM at the Volare Lodge, 5615 Kies Avenue, Niagara Falls, NY 14304. Interment will be held at the convenience of the family. If desired, memorial contributions may be made to the The Parkinson's Association of WNY, Inc., 5140 Main St., Suite 303-154, Williamsville, NY  14221.
