Frances Marie (nee Granto) Markle, 98, of Niagara Falls, NY, passed away peacefully on Monday, June 24, 2013 in Niagara Hospice House in Lockport, NY. She was born in Niagara Falls on March 8, 1915 to the late Rose (nee Batallia) and Frank Granto. Frances was predeceased by her husband, the late Dr. Henry W. Markle. He passed away on June 30, 1997.
For many years, Frances worked in her family owned Depot Grill, and later on was the secretary and co-owner of Granto's Restaurant Corporation. She was a devout catholic and was a member of St. Mary of the Cataract Parish her entire adult life. She also regularly attended St. Teresa of the Infant Jesus Church and enjoyed the Woman's Rosary Group.
Frances is survived by her brothers, Jerry C. (Susan) Granto of Niagara Falls, and Frank (Jacquelyn-rae) Granto of Lewiston. Her devoted niece, Gina Granto (Joseph) Penque of Niagara Falls, and Gerald (Anne) Granto, Angie R.(Ronald) Lucarini, Diann Granto-Bialik, Elena Granto, Frank A. (Renee) Granto, Mark Granto, Nicholas (Amanda) Granto, Joseph (Amy Jean) Granto and Vincent Granto. She is also survived by many great-nieces, nephews and cousins.
Frances will be long remembered as the glamorous hostess at Granto's Restaurant on Falls St. downtown Niagara Falls, the community she loved during the 1950's and 60's were part of her most cherished memories. Frances enjoyed her crossword puzzles, daily devotionals and her daily calls with her family and friends.
The family will be present to receive friends on Thursday from 4-8 PM at the SPALLINO-AMIGONE FUNERAL HOME, 1300 Pine Ave., Niagara Falls, where prayers will be said on Friday morning followed by a Mass of Christian Burial celebrated at St. Mary of the Cataract Church, 259 Fourth Street, Niagara Falls at a time to be announced. Friends invited. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Niagara Hospice, The American Cancer Society or Priscilla L. Penque Memorial Foundation through Citizens Bank.
