Donald R. Chlebowski

WEST HARTFORD, CT — Donald R. Chlebowski, 90, of West Hartford,  CT, husband of the late Mary J. Chlebowski, died Wednesday, October 2, 2013.

Born and raised in Niagara Falls, the son of the late John and Jessie Chlebowski, Donald served with the U.S. Army Air Force in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater during World War II as an airplane and engine mechanic. After the war, he attended Lawrence Institute of Technology in Detroit, MI and returned to Niagara Falls where he and Mary met and married in 1957.  

Donald's career made several stops in the Northeast before a position with Pratt & Whitney brought him to Hartford, CT in 1959. After the birth of their son Brian, the family settled in West Hartford.

Donald became a communicant at the Church of Saint Mark the Evangelist in West Hartford and was a founding member of the Knights of Columbus, Council 10267. He retired from Pratt & Whitney in 1987, but remained active.

Donald hosted a TV show called "Make it Happen" on the West Hartford Public Access Channel for several years. He was active with the West Hartford and Elmwood Senior Centers and served on the West Hartford Senior Advisory Committee until 2009.

He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Brian and Dee Chlebowski; and his grandsons, Joshua and Christian, all of Somers, CT. He also leaves a sister and brother-in-law, Eleanor and Arnold Rzepecki and a nephew, Paul of Michigan; and his aunt, Florence Mocniak of Youngstown, NY.

Funeral services will be Thursday, October 10, 2013, with a procession at 9:15 AM from the Taylor & Modeen Funeral Home, 136 South Main Street, West Hartford, followed at 10:00 AM with a Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated at the Church of Saint Mark the Evangelist, 467 South Quaker Lane, West Hartford. Burial with military honors will follow at Fairview Cemetery, West Hartford. Calling hours will be Wednesday from 3 to 7 PM at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American       Cancer Society.
