Edward Francis O'Farrell


Edward Francis O'Farrell, 89, passed away quietly on Father's Day afternoon (Sunday, June 15th), at the Northgate Health Care Facility, where he was continually visited by family and close friends. He entered the facility last September and was well cared for by staff that will miss him dearly.
He is survived by his sons, Mark (Kathleen) and Brian (Annette); his granddaughters, Meghan (Gary) Groat and Amanda; his younger brother, William "Billy"; his niece, Sharon Matthews; as well as many other nieces, nephews and cousins. He will be profoundly missed and remembered by close friends and family such as Leonard McCarty, John Price, as well as many others. Edward showed unconditional kindness and generosity not only to those close to him, but also to all those in his presence. He was predeceased by his parents, John and Aileen; his brothers, Thomas and John; and his sisters, Marie O'Farrell and Anne Utley. He married his best friend and absolute love, Julia "Minnie" (Shermenta), on May 3, 1952. They spent 43 wonderful, blissful years together until her death in 1996.
As a U.S. Army artilleryman, he served in Patton's Third Army in W.W.II, from Normandy to the Czechoslovakian border. He was awarded the Good Conduct Medal, as well as the EAME Theater ribbon with five bronze stars and campaign ribbons for Normandy, Northern France, the Rhineland, Central Europe and the Ardennes (Battle of the Bulge). He proudly served from March 1943 to October 1945.
After his service in W.W.II, Edward achieved an associate's degree in business from Bryant and Stratton College in 1948. In 1952, he joined the Niagara Falls Police Department where he served for 20 years, retiring in 1971 as a respected Lieutenant. The same year he joined the police force, he established "O'Farrell Motors, which continues operation under the ownership of his son, Mark.
Services to remember and celebrate the life of Edward will be held at ZAJAC FUNERAL HOME, INC., located at 319-24th Street, cor., of Welch Ave., Niagara Falls, NY 14303, on Thursday from 3-7 PM, with a Mass service at 7:30 PM. Memorial donations may be made to Niagara Falls Police Athletic League, 4455 Porter Rd., Niagara Falls, NY 14305.
