Clora M. "Tweety" Smith

LEWISTON — Clora M. "Tweety" Smith, a longtime resident of Cambria, died on Friday, June 13, 2014, in Our Lady of Peace Nursing Care Residence. She was 95.  She was born in Brownville, NY, on December 2, 1918, the daughter of Clarence and Ruth (Roberts) Mellinger.

As a young woman, she worked for the Carborundum Company for several years in the 1940s. She subsequently met and married Howard and raised their family through the 1960s. During the 1970s, Mrs. Smith was employed by Starpoint Central Schools and worked many years for the Niagara County Board of Elections in the Town of Cambria. She was a member and former President of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Cambria Volunteer Fire Company where she, Howard and select others were caterers "extraordinaire." She was a committed, caring parent and conscientious citizen.

Tweety was a devoted Christian and 50-plus year member of St. Stephen's Episcopal Church, Niagara Falls. She was a member of its choir for many years. She found a vocation in Bible study, traveling to people's homes leading study groups.  She also enjoyed gardening, crocheting, entertaining and helping others. Above all, she was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and friend.  

She was predeceased by her husband, Howard B. Smith on April 6, 2004; a daughter, Rae Smith; and sisters, Clarance Wesefeldt, Jean Pashley, Rae Wesefeldt and Phyllis Ayer. Survived by three children, Madelyn (Stephen) Perry of Watertown, NY; Cheryl (late Stanton) Haddock of Salmon, ID, and Meta (Ralph) Goodman, Jr. of Destrehan, LA; four grandchildren, Jeremy (Rebecca) Michalski of MD; Aaron (Kelley) Michalski of SC; Sarah (Mike) Dodd of MT, and Bethany Haddock of ID; four great-grandchildren and one due any day; many nieces and nephews.   

A memorial service will be held Saturday, August 23, at 9:00 AM at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church, 616 Cayuga Drive. The interment will be private in Memorial Park Cemetery, Town of Lewiston. Arrangements by the LANE FUNERAL HOME, INC.
