Sr. Loretta Petersen, OSF

STELLA NIAGARA — Sr. Loretta Petersen, OSF, of Stella Niagara, passed away on Tuesday, July 15, 2014.

She was born Mary Ellen Petersen, in Lackawanna, NY,  on June 8, 1927, the daughter of the late Frank and Helen (Hayes) Petersen.

Sister Loretta was raised in Balboa, Panama Canal Zone and after her high school graduation from Stella Niagara in 1944, she worked for four years as a time and payroll clerk as a civilian employee of the 15th Naval District in the Canal Zone.  

Sister entered the Sisters of St. Francis of Penance and Christian Charity at Stella Niagara  September 26, 1948, and made her profession of vows on August 17, 1951. She received her Bachelor of Arts degree from Rosary Hill (Daemen) College in 1957, and her Masters in          Library Science from the Catholic University of America in Washington, DC in 1969.

Sr. Loretta was a teacher and librarian at the Buffalo Academy of the Sacred Heart and at      Bishop McMahon High School in Buffalo. She had also taught at Holy Rosary Elementary, St. Aloysius Academy, Rosary High School, St. Matthias, St. Rose School, all in Ohio; at Charleston Catholic High School and  Scared Heart School in Charleston, WV; at St. Francis International School in Rome, Italy, and at St. Mary School in Santa Maria, CA.

She is survived by one sister, Eileen T. Petersen of Columbus, OH; a nephew, Thomas Petersen; also several other nephews. Sister was predeceased by one brother.

The family will be present on Wednesday after 2:00 PM at Stella Niagara, 4421 Lower River Road, Stella Niagara, where a prayer service will be held at 7:00 PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday at 10:00 AM in the Sisters Chapel at Stella Niagara. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Sisters of St. Francis, 4421 Lower River Road, Stella Niagara, NY 14144. Interment in Stella Niagara Cemetery.
