Charles A. Mansu, Sr., 88, of Niagara Falls, NY, passed away on Tuesday, December 3, 2013, at Buffalo General Hospital. Born in 1925 in Niagara Falls, NY, he was the son of the late Elia "Leo" and Patrina (Catalano) Mansu.
Chuck, as he was known to family and friends, was a lifelong resident of Niagara Falls, NY and attended local schools. During World War II he served as a Seaman First Class in the U.S. Navy from September 25, 1943, until his honorable discharge on December 22, 1945. He was aboard the U.S.S. Alaska, a battle cruiser in the Pacific Ocean, and fought in Iwo Jima, China, Japan, Panama Canal, Ulithi, Philippines, Korea and Okinawa, and was the recipient of an Asiatic Pacific Medal with two stars, a Philippine Liberation Medal, American Campaign Medal and a World War II Victory Medal. On October 3, 1946, he married Mary J. (DeLabio) Mansu in Niagara Falls, NY. Chuck was a dedicated worker at Nabisco Shredded Wheat Co., formerly known as National Biscuit Co., in Niagara Falls, NY, for 43 years, beginning as a baker and retiring as a business agent.
Chuck was one of the founding members of the Niagara Community Church in Niagara Falls, NY where he served as a Deacon, usher, taught Sunday School, home bible studies and also worked in the youth program. He was a longtime active member of First Assembly of God Church in Niagara Falls, as well as being in charge of their Senior Sparks. He enjoyed cooking, gardening and was an avid fan of the New York Yankees. Above all, Chuck's greatest joy was spending time with his family.
In addition to his wife of 67 years, Mr. Mansu is survived by three children, Rev. Charles A. (Maryann) Mansu of Australia, Deborah (Charles A.) Gugino of Niagara Falls, NY, and Mark (Kelly) Mansu of Springfield, MO; six grandchildren, Aubrey (Ben) Bayliss, Austin (Amy) Mansu, Stephanie (Chris) Toohey, Jennifer (Carlo) Figliomeni, Dustin (Courtney) Mansu and Tasha (Josh) Baker; eight great-grandchildren, Hannah, Zoe, Isabella, Ava, Kalib, Michael, Maverick and Parker; one brother, James (Mary Grace) Mansu of California; three sisters, Frances (Michael) Trunzo of North Tonawanda, NY, Dorothy Liermo and Ann Marie Keesee of Las Vegas, NV; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by five brothers, Joseph Mansu, Sam Mansu, Peter Mansu, Nunzio Mansu and Thomas Mansu; and two sisters, Nina Bainard and Florence Demasi.
Visitation will be on Friday, December 13th from 3-8 PM at the M.J. COLUCCI & SON NIAGARA FUNERAL CHAPEL, 2730 Military Road, Niagara Falls, NY. Family and friends are invited to attend a funeral service on Saturday, December 14th, at 10:30 AM at First Assembly of God Church, 9750 Niagara Falls Boulevard, Niagara Falls, NY. EVERYONE PLEASE ASSEMBLE AT CHURCH. Interment with military honors will be in Acacia Park Cemetery, North Tonawanda, NY.
