NIAGARA FALLS —
Stephen James de Rosa, of Niagara Falls, NY, passed away peacefully at Mt. St. Mary's Hospital on Monday, July 8, 2013, with his family at his side. Stephen was born in Niagara Falls on July 15, 1952, the son of the late Ralph Stephen de Rosa and Sarah (San Pasquale) de Rosa.
He was a graduate of Niagara University and the State University of New York at Buffalo Law School. An attorney in private practice until illness forced him to retire, Stephen was respected by his legal peers for his thorough work and carefully constructed arguments, often being complimented by the bench and opposing counsel. Stephen was particularly known for his kindness and decency to everyone.
An Eagle Scout, Stephen worked summers at Camp Northern Lights in Ontario as a nature and woodslore instructor, and at Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico as a backpacking Ranger. He was Assistant Cubmaster of Pack 849 and Assistant Scoutmaster of Troop 849 in Niagara Falls. With his brother, Peter, he pioneered a 200-mile wilderness canoe route down Ontario's Missinaibi River to James Bay. He was an avid naturalist all his life.
As a member of Niagara Council 247 of the Knights of Columbus, he chaired the committee that commissioned the Columbus relief, on the 500th anniversary of his landing in America. The relief is a large granite monument depicting Columbus' voyages to the New World, and currently stands at St. Mary of the Cataract Church, in Niagara Falls. A devout Catholic, Stephen had a special devotion to St. Joseph, patron of fathers and of a happy death.
In addition to his mother, Stephen is survived by his his two sons, Ethan and Matthew de Rosa; and by his daughter, Vanessa, and her husband Brad Wrest. In a wonderful celebration of life, Stephen's first grandchild, Gianna Wrest, was born on the day he died. He is also survived by his six siblings, Maria and husband, John "Bill" Wolcott, of Niagara Falls; Linda and husband, Robert Boehman, of Frederick, MD; Peter and wife, Arlinda, of Niagara Falls, Rosemary and husband, Larry Le Blond, of Lewiston, Sarah Marie (fiance Anthony Pugliese) de Rosa of Niagara Falls; and Very Reverend Francis M. de Rosa of Colonial Beach, VA. He is also survived by his nieces and nephews, Jonathan Boehman, Amy Boehman-Pollitt, Jessica Boehman, PhD, Christopher Boehman, Joshua Boehman, Meghan Boehman, Sarah Elizabeth Wolcott Nelson, Gregory Wolcott, PhD, Heather Wolcott Hoffman, Cristina de Rosa Skrzypek, Angelica de Rosa, Joseph de Rosa, Raphael de Rosa, Cristian de Rosa, Stefanie de Rosa; and many great-nieces and nephews and cousins.
Visiting hours will be on Thursday, July 11, 2013 from 2-4 PM and from 7-9 PM at LANE FUNERAL HOME, INC., 8622 Buffalo Avenue, Niagara Falls, NY. Prayers will be said on Friday, July 12th at 12:15 PM at the funeral home followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 1:00 PM at St. Vincent De Paul Parish (Prince of Peace site) with Very Rev. Francis de Rosa officiating.
