Marie A. Gwozdek

TOWN OF LEWISTON — Marie A. (Walczyk) Gwozdek, 89 years old, of the Town of Lewiston, passed away on Sunday, February 17, 2013, at her home, while under the care of Niagara Hospice. She was born in Niagara Falls on November 24, 1923, the daughter of the late Walter and Sophia (Blach) Walczyk.

Mrs. Gwozdek attended local schools and was a lifetime member of the former Echo Club. She and her late husband, Matthew, owned and operated Matt's Tavern on Highland Avenue from 1949 until 1993. She enjoyed caring for and spending time with her children and grandsons.

Mrs. Gwozdek is survived by her children, Sharon (Edgar) Hayes of the Town of Lewiston, Robert (Shirley) Gwozdek of the Town of Wheatfield, and Ronald Gwozdek of the Town of Lewiston. She is also survived by her grandsons, Glenn and Mark Gwozdek, and several nieces and nephews. Mrs. Gwozdek was predeceased by her husband, Matthew Gwozdek, who passed away on September 29, 1993; her brothers, Charles Walczyk and Walter Walczyk, Jr.; and her sister, Julia Newens.

Friends may call on Tuesday from 3 until 7 PM at the LABUDA FUNERAL HOME, INC., 356 Portage Road. Friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial on Wednesday at 10:00 AM at St. Raphael's Parish, corner of College and Macklem Avenues, which will be concelebrated by Rev. Ivan Skenderovic and Rev. Lynn Shumway. PLEASE ASSEMBLE AT CHURCH. Interment in Holy Trinity Cemetery, Lewiston. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Niagara Hospice, Inc., 4675 Sunset Drive, Lockport, NY 14094.
