SAN RAFAEL, CA —
Matthew James Salfi, of San Rafael, CA, died, unexpectedly, on Sunday, October 28, 2012. He was born on March 12, 1977 and graduated from Lewiston Porter High School in 1995. He attended College of Marin and trade school for the Plumbers Union. Professionally, Matt will be remembered for the endless brite work he did in various Sausalito harbors, and ultimately earning brotherhood in the Plumbers Union in San Francisco UA Local 38.
Matt Salfi was a gentle soul full of energy. He brought joy and laughter and at times tears to everyone he touched. He was always a compassionate listener and soulful muse. Growing up in Lewiston and Youngstown, NY, Matt and his various crews were always up to fun times, music and laughter, and this is a shout out to all of his friends and family that he loved ! --- ! He loved playing music, sailing, playing ice hockey, and musing about life's many mysteries and always seemed to know every baseball statistic out there.
Matt was an iconoclast and a stubborn character and that is what defined him. It defined his unending love for family and friends and making his best attempt at creating his own path. Matt was a musician from day one. Whether he was singing along to Brian Wilson on his Mickey Mouse guitar or shocking hockey camp with a punk rock cover or playing with his various bands, his guitar work and vocals were inventive. As he got into composing music with friends or under his solo moniker Ratty Daddy, his work always remained unique and built elegantly from the collection of sounds that he and his friends shared growing up in Lewiston and Youngstown, and later on in the San Francisco Bay area.
Matthew James Salfi was the beloved son of Robert (Suzanne) Salfi of Richmond, CA, and Diane (Perdikas) Salfi of Youngstown, NY. In addition to his parents, Matt is survived his loving brother, Jason (Kadie) Salfi; and niece, Lucia of Ithaca, NY; his dear paternal grandparents, Thomas and Jane (Szczerbacki) Salfi of Lewiston, NY; special aunts and uncles, Patrick and Shirley Whelan of Youngstown, NY; Thomas and Maureen Salfi of Lewiston, NY; Carol and Martin Palumbo of Lewiston, NY; and Cindy and Paul Richardson of Youngstown, NY; cherished cousins, Melissa (Whelan), Peter, Michael and Zoe Ranieri of Niagara Falls, NY; Amy (Whelan), Donald, Alexander, Madison and Dixon Reynolds of Youngstown, NY; Brenna (Salfi), Chris and Antonella DeSimone of Rochester, MN; Justin Palumbo of Lewiston, NY; Alex Palumbo of Scottsdale, AZ; and Nicholas, Meghan and Sean Richardson, all of Youngstown, NY; and his treasured dog, Bella.
