William E. King

CONEVILLE, PA — William E. King, 91, of Coneville, formerly of Youngstown, NY, passed away Tuesday, November 5, 2013 in Cole Memorial Hospital, Coudersport, after a short illness.

Born November 30, 1921 in Youngstown, he was a son of George S. and Clara B. Ullrich King. On December 4, 1959 in Punxsutawney, he married Grace Wulfert, who passed away on April 18, 2011.

Bill was a graduate of Youngstown High School, Class of 1939. He served with the U.S. Coast Guard from 1940 to 1945, attaining the rank of 2nd class motor machinist mate, seeing active duty during World War II. He was employed for 33 years at the former Hooker Chemical Company in Niagara Falls, NY, retiring in 1977.

He was a resident of Coneville since 1977, having previously lived in Youngstown. He loved his converted hunting camp mountainside home.

Bill attended the Shinglehouse United Methodist Church. He was a member of the Shinglehouse American Legion Post 530 and a life member of the Coast Guard Combat Veterans Association.  

He enjoyed hunting, fishing, woodworking, gardening, bird watching and snowmobiling. He also enjoyed berry picking, ice fishing, fishing off his boat, four wheeling the mountain trails, and playing the harmonica. He loved the Buffalo Bills, Pittsburgh Pirates and Chicago Cubs. He was an excellent handyman.

Bill valued self-sufficiency, honesty and kindness. He had a quiet and excellent sense of    humor. He faithfully kept a daily journal. He loved spending time with his family and family of friends who helped maintain his independence.

Surviving are two granddaughters, Catherine G. "Cathy" Sloniger of Geneva, NY and Susan S. "Susie" (Joseph) Reed of Penn Yan, NY; two great-grandsons, Edward "Eddie" Reed and Andrew "Andy" Reed; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents and wife, Mr. King was predeceased by a son, Edward C. "Eddie" Sloniger, Jr.; a daughter-in-law, Sharon Sloniger; a grandson, Gary Sloniger; a brother, Arthur G. King; a sister, Helen Connell; and a nephew, Jimmy Fuller.

Friends may call from 10 to 11 AM on Friday, November 8, 2013, at the Virgil L. Howard Funeral Home, 118 South Union Street, Shinglehouse, PA, where funeral services will follow at 11 AM. The Rev. Becky L. Edwards, pastor of the Shinglehouse United Methodist Church, will officiate. Burial will be in Oakland Rural Cemetery, Youngstown, at 2:45 PM on Friday. Members of the Potter County Honor Guard will accord military honors on Friday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Shinglehouse United Methodist Church, PO Box 296, Shinglehouse, PA 16748.
