Joseph Anthony Verciglio

MANASSAS, VA — Joseph Anthony Verciglio, 72, of Manassas, VA, formerly of Niagara Falls, NY, passed away February 1, 2013, at the Virginia Hospital Center, surrounded by his loving family. Joe was   diagnosed in 2008 with Pulmonary Fibrosis and lived the last four years to the fullest, until   complications arose and he lost his battle to the disease.

Born in Niagara Falls, NY on October 9, 1940, he was the son of the late Guissepe and Rose Pezzimenti Verciglio.

Joe grew up on Independence Avenue. He was a 1957 graduate of Niagara Falls High School who enjoyed being a member of the high school baseball team. His love for baseball continued beyond high school. During his college breaks he played on the American Legion baseball team and was a part of Speedy's Auto Wash Municipal League team. Later in life he had the privilege of coaching the Pittsburgh Pirate Penn League team at Sal Maglie Stadium.

Joe left Niagara Falls and went to Paul Smith's Junior college in 1958, then onto West Virginia University in 1960, where he played baseball and received his master's degree in education. After graduation on June 13, 1964 in Niagara Falls, NY, he married the love of his life, the former Charlotte Ann Pane, who survives. Joe and Charlotte moved to Fairfax, VA in 1964, where he became a teacher and coach until his retirement in October of 1995.

Joe was inducted into the National Wrestling Hall of Fame in 1997; the James Madison Hall of Fame in 2003; and the Niagara Falls Sports Hall of Fame in 2006.

Joe was a loving husband and father, and loved his grandchildren more than life itself. He loved his Italian heritage, Niagara Falls, his many friends and all sports. He also enjoyed coaching, fishing and hunting, and he especially enjoyed time on the beach, the ocean and his home in Rehoboth Beach, DE.
