John C. Dougherty

LEWISTON — John C. Dougherty, 64, a longtime resident of Lewiston, NY, passed away on Sunday, January 27, 2013, at his residence, following a lengthy illness. Born on December 18, 1948 in Niagara Falls, NY, he was the son of the late Charles and Hannah Esther (Riordan) Dougherty.

Mr. Dougherty attended local schools and graduated from the former Bishop Duffy High School in 1967. John also attended Niagara County Community College. He served in the United States Marine Corps during the Vietnam War participating in numerous operations against the Insurgent Communist Forces, with the 1st Marine Division, 5th Regiment, 3rd Battalion Lima Company, from April of 1969 until his honorable discharge in September of 1970. While serving, Mr. Dougherty was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Combat Action Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with 1 star, Rifle Marksmanship Badge and the Purple Heart.  On October 2, 1971, John married the former Joan Pino in Niagara Falls, NY. For 34 years, he worked as a Niagara Falls Police Officer and retired in 2008, as Lieutenant, after holding that position for ten years. Mr. Dougherty was the recipient of the Levy Award and in 1984, the Police Medal of Honor for Bravery. John loved spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren.

In addition to his beloved wife of 41 years, Mr. Dougherty is survived by four children, John (Heather) Dougherty of Liverpool, NY, Jennifer (Jeremy) Glen of Rochester, NY, Janelle Dougherty-Dorgan of Wheatfield, NY, and Joseph Dougherty of Leesburg, VA; and nine grandchildren, Hannah, Elise and Allison Dougherty, Jeremy, Jaena and James Glen and Jillian, Mya and Marlee Dorgan. John is also survived by one sister, Kathleen (John) Gadawski of Lewiston, NY; his mother-in-law, Anne (late Frank) Pino of Niagara Falls, NY; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

The family will be present to receive friends on Wednesday, from 2-4 and 6-8 PM in the Chapel of OTTO REDANZ FUNERAL HOME, 2215 Military Road, Niagara Falls, NY (297-9007). A Mass of Christian Burial, concluding with military honors, will be celebrated on Thursday, January 31st, at 11:00 AM in St. Peter's Roman Catholic Church, 620 Center Street, Lewiston, NY, with Rev. Michael P. Zuffoletto serving as celebrant. EVERYONE PLEASE ASSEMBLE AT THE CHURCH. A private interment will be held in Arlington National    Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial offerings may be made to the Disabled American Veterans, Attn: Gift Processing, P.O. Box 14301, Cincinnati, OH 45250-0301.
