F. Gordon McCombs, lifetime resident of Niagara Falls, passed away peacefully on Friday, November 15, 2013, at Niagara Hospice House in Lockport. He was 89. He was born in Niagara Falls on July 13, 1924, a son of the late M. Frank and Artie (Gordon) McCombs. He attended local schools and graduated from LaSalle Jr./Sr. High School.
After graduation he entered the United Stated Navy in 1941, serving in Naval Aviation during World War II until his honorable discharge in 1945. He married Jean Flanagan on October 18, 1946, and then he furthered his education attending Clarkson University and the University of Buffalo. He worked for the Niagara Falls Police Department, and then as a civil engineer for the City of Niagara Falls, and then the New York Power Authority until his retirement.
Mr. McCombs was a longtime member and past Commodore of the LaSalle Yacht Club, a member of the International Order of the Blue Gavel, the Elks Lodge #346, where he was a lifetime member of 64 years, the Loyal Order of the Moose, the American Legion Post #1451. He was very active in the Civil Air Patrol when his sons were young and he enjoyed boating, flying, skiing and his time with his family.
He is survived by his loving wife of 67 years, Jean (Flanagan) McCombs; three children, Candy (Edmund Thomas) McCombs of North Evans, Matthew (Kim) McCombs of Clearwater, FL, and Patrick (Karen) McCombs of Lancaster. He is also survived by six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his sister, Jean (Elton C.) Schwinger, Jr.
Friends may call at the LANE FUNERAL HOME, INC., 8622 Buffalo Ave., on Monday from 2-4 and 7-9 PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Tuesday at 10 AM at St. Mary of the Cataract Church, 259 Fourth St., Niagara Falls. Entombment will be in Gate of Heaven Mausoleum in the Town of Lewiston.
