NIAGARA FALLS —
Donna G. Ewins of Niagara Falls, NY, passed away after a brief illness in Myrtle Beach, SC on Thursday, March 6, 2014. She is the daughter of the late George William Ewins and the late Edith Lodema Lossing Ewins. Ms. Ewins is sadly missed by her dear friend, Marjorie Gillies and the extended family of the late Christine Jacoby. She is also missed by Valerie Smith, her pen pal in England.
Donna was born in Bridgeport, CT on December 11, 1946 and moved with her family to Michigan where the family settled in Onsted. She graduated from Onsted H.S. in 1964. Later she graduated Cum Laude from Central Michigan University. Upon appointment as a social studies teacher in the Niagara Falls School District, she taught at Niagara Falls High School, Trott and LaSalle Senior High School.
Following her retirement from the Niagara Falls School District in 2001, she concentrated her efforts on genealogical studies. Upon finding and researching her family's roots, she published "Pieter Pieterse Lassen of Dutchess County and His Descendants", a history of the Lossing Family. This research led her to address her newly found cousins in Norwich, Ontario, Canada. Her hobbies were knitting, cross-stitching, reading, and studying history and archaeology in the US and Europe. Her travels abroad included Egypt, France, the United Kingdom-extensively in Scotland and England. Donna was an award-winning photographer, taking first place in the 1982 Niagara Gazette contest and later receiving "Honorable Mention" from Kodak.
A Memorial Service will take place at the First Unitarian Universalist Church of Niagara, 639 Main Street on Sunday, April 6, 2014 at 2:30 PM with the Rev. Theresa Kime officiating. A reception will follow the service. Funeral arrangements were made by the Watson Funeral Services & Crematory, Conway, SC. There will be no prior visitation. Flowers are gratefully declined.
