Ernest Kitchen, Sr. passed away on Saturday, June 8th after a lengthy illness. He was born in Leesburg, FL on December 16, 1929 to the late Elizabeth Wingo and Alec Kitchen. He attended Lake County Training School in Leesburg. Ernie, as he was known to all family and friends, left his native Florida in the mid-1940's to join his father and uncle in Niagara Falls. After arriving in Niagara Falls he found employment with the Pittsburgh Metallurgical Company and worked for the company through its subsequent owners. He retired after 42 years of service. He was a lifelong member of New Hope Baptist Church where he and his beloved wife Dorothy were married in 1954.
He devoted a great deal of his time to the church after his retirement, serving on the Trustee Board and driving the church van. He also became very active in community affairs working with the local block club and serving on the Board of the Center City Neighborhood Development Corporation and the Niagara Falls Zoning Board of Appeals. He was an avid sports fan. He enjoyed football; the Cleveland Browns was his favorite team, as well as basketball and baseball. He also enjoyed spending time with his family, extended family and friends.
He is survived by his sons, Ernest, Jr. (Linda) of Vorheesville, NY, Kevin of Buffalo, NY and Kerry of Niagara Falls; five grandsons, Derek, Keenan, Ryan, Kerry and Craig; and a granddaughter, Amanda. He is also survived by sister-in-law, Bernadette Oubre; and brother-in-law, Raymond Oubre of Vacharrie, LA; along with a host of cousins, nephews and nieces and godchildren. He was predeceased by his wife; and brother, Thomas.
A viewing will take place on Friday, June 14, 2013 at 11:00 AM with the funeral service following at 12:00 PM at the New Hope Baptist Church, 1122 Buffalo Avenue, Niagara Falls, NY. Internment will follow immediately after the service at Oakwood Cemetery in Niagara Falls. Arrangements were handled by the H. Alfred Lewis Mortuary, 968 Jefferson Avenue, Buffalo, NY.
