Nellie M. Ashford

LEWISTON — Nellie M. Ashford, 91, of Niagara Falls, passed away quietly November 10, 2013 in Our Lady of Peace Health Care Faculty. Born July 13, 1922, she was the daughter of the late Charles and Ivery (Gilbert) King. Nellie attended The Prestigious Philadelphia School for Girls, graduating in 1949. She received a registered nursing degree from Mercy Douglas Nursing School.

Mrs. Ashford was the first African American supervisor and head nurse at the Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center. She was a longtime member of the St. John AME Church where she served in various ministries, including steward board and Sunday School teacher. Throughout her lifetime she received many awards, including "The TOPS Good Neighbor Award" and "The President's Medal" from Niagara University.

Mrs. Ashford was a foster parent for over 30 years and fostered over 100 children and adopted three children, Dustin Barbara, Abrahiem K. Ashford and Jamarcus Wilson. She was predeceased by her husband of 47 years, Emmett J. Asford, Sr.; three brothers, Hughes, Rudolph and Jerald King; two sisters, Alice Tingle and Geraldine Bennett.

Surviving are one daughter, Edna Elaine Ashford Tullos; two sons, Emmett J. "Romie"       Ashford Jr. and Eric J. Ashford; nine grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends, including a devoted nephew, Thomas L. Ashford, Jr.

Visitation, Friday 11 AM in the St. John AME Church, 917 Garden Ave. Funeral services to   follow at Noon. Burial, Acacia Park. Arrangements by WILLIAMSON FUNERAL HOME, 635 Main St.
