Niagara swings back into MAAC volleyball final

NIAGARA FALLS — Having won 18 matches in a row, the Niagara women’s volleyball team is now one more win away from accomplishing their primary goal for the season.

Niagara defeated Fairfield in four sets Friday in the semifinal round of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference championship tournament in Lake Buena Vista, Fla.

The top-seeded and defending champion Purple Eagles (24-8) will face No. 2-seed Iona at 2 p.m. today in the tournament final. The game will be broadcast on ESPN3.com, and the winner will qualify for the NCAA tournament.

“We are really excited to have an opportunity to defend our title,” coach Susan Clements said.

Niagara won the first set 25-19 on Friday, dropped the second set 25-20, then won the final two sets by scores of 25-20 and 25-15.

Hannah Hedrick recorded her 12th double-double of the season with 11 kills and 21 digs. Kari Honomichl had 12 kills and six digs. Michelle James had 42 assists and 12 digs. Kathy Bibler and Ellen Senf each had 10 kills. Sam Morgan had 19 digs and Rebecca Suchy had 10.

“Our passing picked up and we were making smart shots,” Clements said. “Kathy (Bibler) really stepped up in the match to take the pressure off our outsides.”
