COLLEGE ROUNDUP (July 16): Niagara women's hoopsters make honor roll

The Niagara University women’s basketball team has earned a spot on the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association Academic Team Honor Roll after recording the 13th-best cumulative grade-point average (3.361) in Division I last season.

Niagara has earned a spot on the honor roll in seven of the past ten seasons.

“I’m proud of our student-athletes for continuing the strong academic tradition of the women’s basketball program,” athletics director Ed McLaughlin said. “Due to our hard work and diligence, I know that our academic success and service win the community will continue as we improve on the floor.”

The Purple Eagles were 8-22 in their first season under coach Kendra Faustin.



UB names new softball coach

Jennifer Teague has been hired as the University at Buffalo’s new softball coach, athletics director Warde Manuel announced Tuesday.

Teague led the Philadelphia Force of the National Pro Fastpitch League to a 17-11 record in 2007. The Force were off to a 17-7 record so far this season.

Prior to coaching at the professional level, Teague spent three years as the top assistant and pitching coach at Eastern Michigan University. She was a volunteer assistant for the University of Michigan in 2005 when the Wolverines won the national championship.

“We wanted someone who had experience with a championship program and who could develop young women as softball players, and more importantly, as people,” Manuel said. “I believe we have found such a person in Jennifer Teague. Her familiarity with the Mid-American Conference and her ability to recruit both locally and nationally will be beneficial in helping us reach our ultimate goal of a MAC Championship.”
