Niagara County Fair offers new, old fun

Niagara Gazette — It’s not quite the same old Niagara County Fair this weekend — the annual mid-summer celebration is offering some new and renewed activities.

The county fair runs through Sunday at Cornell Cooperative Extension of Lake Avenue.

New to the fair will be “K9s in Flight.” The “Homeless to Flying” show, featuring world-class K9 athletes. Shows will take place three times today and Friday; four times on Saturday, and two times on Sunday.

The Air Mutts, who are rescued or adopted dogs from shelters all over the country, will do dock-diving, high jump and frisbee in a high-flying atmosphere.

Also “new” this year is a return of the Firefighters Parade, taking place on Saturday. It was last held 20 years ago.

The Niagara County Fire Chiefs Association is sponsoring the parade which will line up at 3 p.m. at Wyndham Lawn and proceed into the fair rounds to the Wrights Corners Fire Co. beer tent. Lake Avenue will be closed to traffic during the parade.

About 20 pieces of firefighting apparatus will be featured. There will be marchers from the Niagara Falls Air Reserve Station and the Niagara County Sheriff’s Office as well.

Favorites returning include the greased pole event, chicken barbecue, tractor parade, 4-H awards, Classic Car Show and carnival rides.

Just like every year, the 4-H members worked all year to prepare their fair entries in the areas of animal science, plant science, social science, nutritional science, mechanical science and natural sciences. Home environment and consumer economics creations are on display at the 4-H building. Some ribbon winners will be displayed at the State Fair in Syracuse at the end of August.

Daily tickets are $3 Ages 6 and under are free. Fair visitors will have free parking by entering through the north side entry gate.
