The wait is almost over, Iration coming to Buffalo

Night & Day — This week things begin to slow down on the concert front, for everyone but me as my two favorite performers come to town on back to back nights, Also coming to town, a Seattle-based rock band from the ‘90s, a Texas blues guitarist, an up-and-coming electronica band and a young reggae band from the West Coast.

Tonight in Buffalo, Todd Rundgren headlines the Thursday at Canalside show. It will be my third Todd show of the year and the 123 time I have seen him. Call it an obsession (my wife does) but I never get sick of hearing or seeing Todd. The current mini-tour features his “greatest hits” including “Hello It’s Me”, “I Saw the Light” and “Love is the Answer.” I will be seeing him in Akron on Aug. 31 with a full orchestra.

On Friday in Lockport, former Triumph guitarist Rik Emmett comes to town for a free show. I have seen Rik well over 50 times. Since leaving Triumph, Rik has amassed a great catalogue of solo material including his latest epic work “Marco’s Secret Songbook.” It is highly recommended.

On Friday at The Town Ballroom, synthpop sensations Owl City are on stage. The band formed in 2007 and in just a few short years they have already released a platinum selling album, “Ocean Eyes.” Just last month they released “The Midsummer Station-Acoustic EP.”

On Saturday at Seneca Niagara Casino’s Bears Den, Seattle rockers Candlebox will be coming to town. The band’s eponymous debut in 1993 went quadruple platinum. The band split up in 1999 but reformed in 2006 and has been steadily recording and touring since then.

The featured show this week is Iration at Buffalo’s Waiting Room on Tuesday. The reggae band from Santa Barbara, Calif., by way of Hawaii recently released its third album “Automatic.” They last played the area as an opener for Pepper.

  • NAD third person.jpg REVIEW: Meandering melodrama "Third Person," is structured like "Crash." Lightning doesn't strike twice for writer-director Paul Haggis with "Third Person," a meandering melodrama that is structured exactly like his "Crash," which undeservedly won the 2006 Academy Award for best picture over the much better "Brokeback Mountain." Haggis again tries to juggle multiple storylines, but this time the plot threads unravel and nothing we see or hear is very engaging.
