BPO offers popular holiday favorites

Night & Day — The Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra will be helping Western New Yorkers get into the spirit of the holiday season with several concerts throughout the region during the next few weeks.

“A Classical Christmas” will feature rising star soprano Emily Tworek-Helenbrook, fresh from her recent appearance on the nationally-broadcast radio show “From the Top,” the Alexander native will perform pieces by Handel and Massenet. Tworek-Helenbrook has performed at the Music Festival of Perugia in Italy, and with the Rochester Philharmonic, Genesee Symphony and with other regional groups. She is studying at Eastman School of Music and the University of Rochester, in the dual degree program for vocal performance and pre-law.

 JoAnn Falletta will conduct this concert, which also features music from “Amahl and the Night Visitors” and works by John Rutter and Leroy Anderson. The concert will take place at 10:30 a.m. Dec. 7 and 8 p.m. Dec. 8.

“A Jolly Holiday With The BPO” will be performed at 2:30 p.m.  Dec. 9, conducted by BPO associate conductor Matthew Kraemer. Part of the BPO’s Family Series, this concert features a reading of “A Visit from St. Nick (’Twas the Night Before Christmas)” and an audience sing-along. The Albright-Knox Art Gallery will present pre-concert activities, and children will have milk and cookies with Santa after the concert.

The “First Niagara Holiday Pops” concert will feature Irish tenor Ronan Tynan, well-known to hockey fans for performing the national anthems before Sabres home games. He has garnered international renown through his many recordings, his appearances as a solo performer and as one of the Irish Tenors, and his career as a motivational speaker and author. The Buffalo Philharmonic Chorus and Buffalo Niagara Youth Chorus will join Tynan and the BPO in celebrating the season on at 8 p.m.  Dec. 14  and Dec. 15 and at 2:30 p.m. Dec. 16. A coffee concert will be presented without Ronan Tynan at 10:30 a.m. Dec. 15. Concertgoers will enjoy free coffee and pastries, and music from “The Polar Express, “ “It’s a Wonderful Life,” and more. A sing-along will close the show.

The Buffalo Philharmonic will perform several concerts around the region during the holiday season. At 8 p.m.  Dec. 2, the BPO and the Buffalo Philharmonic Chorus will present “Handel’s Messiah”  in Our Lady of Victory Basilica at 767 Ridge Road, Lackawanna. They will perform a free concert as part of the M&T holiday concert series at 1 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 15 at 545 Main St. in the gold dome building.
