'Alice in Wonderland" comes alive in Lewiston June 1

Night & Day — A Mad Hatter’s tea party, complete with a queen yelling “Off with their heads,” and a duchess who shakes pepper on her baby, are all part of the “Alice in Wonderland,” celebration being held June 1 in Lewiston by the Lewiston Council on the Arts.

The highlight of the afternoon will be the 2 p.m. performance by Motus O Dance, with their interpretation of “Alice.” The performance has been called an exhilarating adventure that spins audience members off into another land.

“They have created a whole ballet around the story,” said Eva Nicklas, a spokesperson of the Lewiston Council on the Arts, which is sponsoring the event. “It’s not a traditional ballet. They’re all professionally trained and it’s very acrobatic. It’s very loud and showy and the makeup and costumers are bizarre.

“It’s an absolutely a wonderful production,” said Nicklas. “For any adult interested in dance, I would say come for just that. They are the creme de la creme.”

The high-energy troupe works to provide a fresh interpretation of “Alice” in her topsy, turvy world, created to make modern dance understandable and fun to even the youngest viewers, while also appealing to adult dance fans, she said.

Afternoon activities begin at 12:30 p.m. and include, hat making, games, stories, face painting, lots of bubbles, and a Mad Hatter’s Tea Party! The audience will meet real live characters from Lewis Carroll’s beloved stories, including the Queen of Hearts, the Duchess, Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum, and more.

Special treats will include cookies donated by Lewiston bakeries including DiCamillo’s Bakery, Mangia Cafe and the Village Bake Shoppe and chocolate goodies from Kelly’s Country Store on Grand Island. “The local bakeries have gone above and beyond helping to make this event a success,” said Eva Nicklas, a spokesperson for the Lewiston Arts Council.
