Lewiston Gardenfest: Bigger and better this year

Staff reports
Night & Day

Night & Day — Every year, people are liking the Lewiston Gardenfest a little bit more.

The festival, into its eighth year this weekend, has grown a little bit more each year, which means gardeners will find more to love than ever before. The two day event will be held from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

”The part I love the most is the satisfaction I get from not only the vendors and participants but from the community itself,” said Barbara Landree, chairwoman of the event for the third year in a row, and who credited her small committee of 12 with their hard work in putting together all aspects of the festival. “The shopkeepers and the restaurant owners and the community embrace this festival,” she added.

About 55 vendors are expected, selling all sorts of gardening related items. A free garden walk will feature nine public and private gardens, varying in size and style, located both within walking distance and also a short drive from Center Street. A complete listing of participating gardens will be available during the event at one of the Lewiston GardenFest hospitality booths.

Garden talks are also scheduled for each day of the event. At 11:30 a.m. Saturday, Lyn Chimera, owner and founder of “Lessons from Nature” will speak on “Sustainable Gardening for the Home Gardener.” Gardening expert Sally Cunningham will present “Ecological Landscaping: What we can do in our yards and gardens is very important to Mother Nature” at 11:30 a.m. on Sunday.

In addition, representatives from Cornell Cooperative Extension, the Hosta & Daylily Society, and the Iris Society will be available to answer gardening questions throughout the weekend.

Also, area gardeners can participate in the Container Garden Contest. They can print their “garden” in a planter or any type of container, along with a stand for display, to the hospitality booth at 4th and Center Streets by 9 a.m. on Saturday. Festivalgoers will be able to vote for their favorites throughout the weekend and prizes will be awarded to the top vote-getters. For tips and examples, visit
