JENNINGS: Trio of guitar masters in town this week

Night & Day — There is quite a collection of great shows coming to the area over the next week in addition to our visit from Beatle Ringo Starr on Tuesday. There are three respected guitarists and one of the world’s best bass players coming to the area. In addition, the Xerox International Jazz Festival kicks off in Rochester, and if you love music and have never attended the event you should definitely make the trip.

We will start in Buffalo on Friday with Popa Chubby, an amazing blues guitarist in the tradition of Jimi Hendrix and Stevie Ray Vaughan. His performance is part of the sixth annual BBQ & Blues Event held on Mississippi Street in Buffalo near First Niagara Center. It starts at 5:15 p.m. The after party will be held at Buffalo Iron Works at 9 p.m.

General admission tickets are just $25 and available through Check out for all of the details.

On Saturday at The Sportsmens Tavern in Buffalo, they will be hosting slide guitarist Sonny Landreth, who has appeared onstage with Jimmy Buffett, Eric Clapton and Mark Knopfler. I finally had a chance to catch a show at The Sportsmens last week, and it is an amazing venue.

Tickets are $25 in advance and $30 at the door. Check for details.

Over at Canalside in Buffalo on Saturday they will be hosting the Tedeschi Trucks Band. Fans of The Allman Brothers and Bonnie Raitt will absolutely love these two. Brother Wease, a longtime morning host in Rochester, constantly talks them up.

Tickets start at just $15 and are available on

On Sunday in North Tonawanda they will be hosting the return of Primus. Last year the show was free, this year they sold some advance tickets at $7 but at press time, they bumped them up to $15. It will be interesting to see if that impacts attendance this year.
