Niagara Gazette — The village of Wilson will celebrate the new year with music, snack vendors and two ball drops. The Lil’ Apple Family Ball Drop, a family friendly event, will begin at 7 p.m. culminating with the first drop at 9 p.m. At midnight, a second drop will usher in 2014.

The New Year’s Eve event is a 27-year tradition in Wilson, and this is the sixth year the family oriented event will proceed it. The event gets its name from Wilson’s history of apple production.

The Lil Apple Ball Drop is sponsored by the Wilson Business and Professional Association.

The Wilson Lions Club also contributes to the event.

“It has truly become a holiday tradition in Wilson,” business association secretary Jeanine Johnson said.

“We see people from out of the area as well as from Wilson attending, and some of them return every year.”

Clark Rigging and Rental Corp will bring in a super-sized crane to lower the illuminated ball twice.

The event is held in the parking lot of the Wilson Volunteer Fire Co. #1. A disc jockey will be playing music from 7 to 9 p.m. for dancing and karaoke. The First Baptist Church will be selling snacks and Boy Scout Troop 67 will have hot chocolate and coffee for sale.

The event is more than a holiday celebration, Johnson said.

“If you really look around, you’ll see people who haven’t seen each other in a long time conversing and remembering other people,” Johnson said. “It’s definitely more than just another ball drop.”
