Duran Duran satisfies locals' hunger for '80s hits

BY KEVIN PURDY
Night & Day

Duran Duran has always done things just a little bit bigger and bolder than its contemporaries.

Music videos? The British quintet practically rewrote the rulebook back in 1982 with its sun-drenched clip for “Rio.”

Comebacks? Name another ’80s band that had a single chart in the top 10 in 1993, when grunge reigned supreme.

So when it comes to a reunion tour, it only makes sense that Duran Duran would do something almost no one else can manage — have its original lineup on stage playing the songs that sold more than 70 million records worldwide.

Actually, due to an illness, one member — guitarist Andy Taylor — is being replaced for this mini-tour, but Simon LeBon, Nick Rhodes, John Taylor and Roger Taylor will appear at the Seneca Events Center inside the Niagara Falls casino at 8 p.m. Nov. 4.

Tickets start at $60. Call 299-1100 for more information.

Here’s a great reason to leave the oven cold Wednesday.

At 13 restaurants around Niagara County, 20 percent of your bill will go toward Niagara Hospice as part of the Lockport organization’s annual “Hospice-Tality” event.

So make plans to hit up any of the following establishments: The Brickyard and the Steelhead Irish Pub in Lewiston; The Como Restaurant in Niagara Falls; Macri’s Italian Grille in Wheatfield; The Hideaway Grille, Terranova’s Roman Café and Nestor’s Texas Red Hots in North Tonawanda; Mariner’s Landing in Olcott; The Basket Factory in Middleport; and the Village Eatery Italian Bistro, Cammarata’s Restaurant, Braccetto’s Restaurant and The Shamus Restaurant in Lockport.

For more information, call 439-4417 or visit niagarahospice.org.

Ali vs. Frazier. Yankees vs. Red Sox. Bryan vs. Darrow.

It may not get much replay on ESPN Classic, but the confrontation that played out inside a Tennessee courtroom in 1925 ranks as one of the greatest matches of skill and dramatic suspense in human history.

Starting Nov. 3, the Niagara Regional Theatre Guild will bring “Inherit the Wind,” the drama which captures that fateful face-off, to the Riviera Theatre in North Tonawanda.

An opening night reception will be held following the premiere at 8 p.m. at the theater, 67 Webster St. Tickets are $10 on opening night, and $14 for the 8 p.m. shows Nov. 4, 10, and 11, as well as a Sunday matinee at 3 p.m. Nov. 5, with discounts for seniors and children.

For more information, call 284-6358 or visit niagaratheatre.com.
