HS ROUNDUP: Wolverines open boys golf season with win

Niagara Falls opened Niagara Frontier League golf action with a 13-11 win over Niagara-Wheatfield on Wednesday at Tan Tara Golf Club.

Josh Luzak took home medalist honors for the Falcons (0-1), shooting a 1-under 35. Wheatfield’s Alex Buerger posted a 40.

Stosh Kajfasz led the Wolverines (1-0) with a 42. Chris Brown, T.J. Bullock and Nick Accardo each shot 43.

Grand Island 12.5,Ken West 11.5

Chris Rajczak’s 2-over 39 led the Vikings to victory at Sheridan Park. Jeremy Chopra contributed a 43 for GI (1-0).

Scott Moser shot a 37 for the Blue Devils (0-1), earning medalist honors. John Haberman shot 40 for West.

Lockport 15.5, Ken East 8.5

Pasha Syed shot a 2-over 38 at Brighton Park, helping the Lions win their first league match over the Bulldogs.

Pierce Terrance led Ken East (0-1) with a 39, and Kris Boyes shot 40. Lockport (1-0) got a 39 from Matt Sansone and a 41 from Zack Shannon.

Lew-Port 13.5,North Tonawanda 10.5

Anthony Laurendi’s 5-over 41 at Niagara Frontier Country Club allowed the Lancers to open league play with a win. Anthony Dibacco added a 42 for Lew-Port

Justin Kaszubski shot 42 for the Lumberjacks (0-1).

Lancaster 3, Starpoint 0

Kyle Craig made 10 saves to keep the score close. Josh Doores played well in the midfield for the homestanding Spartans (0-2).

Girls Soccer

Starpoint 4, Amherst 2

The Spartans (2-0) got two goals from Mel Parker and a goal each from Nicole Borner and Brittany Bratek. Borner also assisted on two goals.

Becca Budin and Ellen Janicki scored goals for Amherst.

Wilson 1, Akron 0

Katie Burke scored the game-winning goal on an assist from Danielle Moon. Julie Tagg made 10 saves for Wilson (1-0).

GIRLS VOLLEYBALL

Medina 3, Wilson 0

Karie Seabert had six kills and five aces, but it wasn’t enough as Medina swept Wilson, 25-9, 25-21, 25-15 in Niagara-Orleans League play.

Abby Oveis led Medina with 11 kills, while Jacquie Brownb added nine aces for thge Mustangs (1-0).

St. Mary’s (Lancaster) 3, NT 0

The host school swept NT 25-17, 25-9, 25-18.

Shannon Wilson led the Lady Jacks with three kills and 12 digs. Chrissy Fretthold had three kills and 11 digs, while Mary Connell had three kills and six digs.

St. Mary’s moved to 1-0 on the season. Stats weren’t available. NT fell to 1-1.

Starpoint 3, N-W 1

The Spartans (1-0) beat Niagara-Wheatfield (0-1) in four games, 25-11, 25-13, 26-28, 25-19. No stats were available for either team.

Grand Island 3, Ken West 2

The doubles tandems of Lauren McGowan and Vida Rostami along with Micahlena Beyer and Courtney Catalano lifted Grand Island (1-0) past Kenmore West (0-1).

Niagara Falls 4, Lew-Port 1

Niagara Falls’ Andria Janese, Donna Schultz and Shelby Jankowski were singles winners as the Wolverines (1-0) beat Lewiston-Porter (0-1).

Ken East 5, N-W 0

Samanatha Hall, Holly Jung and Kerrie O’Keefe each won their respective singles matches as Ken East (1-0) shutout Niagara-Wheatfield (0-1).

Lockport 5, NT 0

Brenna Miller, Miller Barmasse and Katelyn Smith won singles matches as Lockport (1-0) blanked North Tonawanda (0-1).
