THURSDAY: Special meeting set to review proposed sheriff’s union contract (2:47 p.m.)

Niagara County lawmakers will return from their summer break earlier than expected to discuss a proposed contract with the union representing road patrol deputies in the Sheriff's Department.

Legislature Chairman Bill Ross, C-Wheatfield, has called a special meeting for Aug. 20 to allow lawmakers to review the tentative deal.

The Legislature was scheduled to return from its August break on Sept. 2. Ross said it was necessary to call a special meeting to due to the timeliness of some of the provisions included in the union agreement.

"Some of the items that need to be enacted have a timeline," Ross said.

The special meeting will follow a pair of Legislature committee meetings scheduled for Aug. 20, including Community Services at 5 p.m. and Community Safety and Security at 5:30 p.m. The special legislative session is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. All three meetings will be held in the Legislature Chambers at the Niagara County Courthouse in Lockport.
