LANE: Big football games mean bigger bets

Bell — who would take the Giants with the points — cautions that the line will probably creep back toward 14. That’s because professional gamblers placed their bets early, while the general public tends bet late.
“The Super Bowl is bet predominantly by the public,” he said. “Casual bettors like the marquee teams.”
Whether traditional or oddball, remember to have fun when wagering on Sunday’s game because, after all, those who take your bets aren’t in it for the camaraderie.

• The biggest point spread in Super Bowl history came in Super Bowl XXIX (San Francisco -19 points over San Diego Chargers; the 49ers won, 49-26)
• The biggest underdog to ever win a Super Bowl was the New York Jets in Super Bowl III, who upset the Baltimore Colts as a 17-point underdog
• There have been nine favorites of 12 or more in Super Bowl history prior to New England this year; three of the underdogs pulled the upset
• The Giants won three straight road games to reach Super Bowl XLII; considering the Vegas odds on the Giants’ playoff games, the chances of New York winning all three was 39-to-1
