CHEEKTOWAGA — Local, state and federal law enforcement and emergency response agencies will be holding a field training exercise this weekend at the Buffalo airport.

The Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority says the training drill will be held Saturday morning at Buffalo Niagara International Airport in Cheektowaga.

Officials say the scenario is designed around an airplane with 80 passengers on board making a low-impact crash landing off the runway after being diverted to the airport when smoke is reported in the cockpit. The drill will also include an improvised explosive device found aboard the plane by first responders.

Participants include the airport's rescue unit, transit police, the FBI, state troopers, Erie County sheriff's deputies, Buffalo firefighters and other emergency responders.

Officials say the public shouldn't be alarmed by emergency vehicles converging at the airport during the drill.
