Niagara Gazette — Drowsy driving and a blown stop sign led to two serious accidents in the Falls on Thursday.

Falls Police Traffic Division officers said the first crash came just after 9 a.m. when a car, going west on Porter Road, slammed into a home in the 2000 block of Hyde Park Boulevard.

“The vehicle just went through the intersection and hit the home,” Traffic Division Capt. Angela Munn said. “We believe the driver, who was coming home from working the midnight shift, may have fallen asleep (at the wheel).”

Four people, who lived in the home, were on the second floor at the time of the crash and were not hurt. The driver of the car also escaped injury.

Accident investigators did not charge the driver.

The house, a rental property, did not fare as well. The home suffered extensive damage and was condemned.

Falls Director of Inspections Dennis Virtuoso said a check of the property showed it was uninhabitable.

“It’s structurally unsound,” he said.

Virtuoso said the property has a California owner who was contacted and arranged for temporary repairs to the structure.

“They are shoring it up and boarding it up,” he said.

The second crash occurred around 4 p.m. at the corner of 18th Street and Walnut Avenue. Munn said a car traveling on 16th Street ran the stop sign at Walnut Avenue and broad-sided an SUV.

“The SUV rolled over and the car continued on, striking two homes on Walnut,” Munn said.

The Traffic Division captain said neither home was seriously damaged. Both drivers suffered minor injuries.

The driver of the car was taken to Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center for treatment of cuts she received when her air bags deployed. The driver of the SUV was also taken to Memorial where he was treated and released.

Police said they issued three tickets to the driver of the car, all relating to running the stop sign.
