Fire companies battle Lockport house fire

LOCKPORT — Several fire companies responded to a house fire at 5463 Niagara St. Ext. in Lockport about 9:45 a.m. Sunday.

Upon arrival, a Niagara County Sheriff's deputy said he met hp with the homeowner who was attempting to enter home to determine where fire was. He then moved his vehicles away from the home and go back into the house to get some clothing that was still packed from a vacation he had just returned from. He was then told by the deputy he couldn't go back into the home for safety reasons.

The homeowner told the deputy he smelled something unusual in the home and went to a rear, upstairs apartment. When he opened the door he was overwhelmed by smoke so he closed the door and got his family and dog out of the home.

The deputy said shortly after his arrival the rear of the home became completely engulfed in flame.

South Lockport, Wrights Corners and Cambria fire departments responded to fight the fire, as well as Niagara County Hazmat.

The fire's cause has yet to be determined.
